The in-depth analysis and evaluation of nine different second track diplomacy cases is elaborated by using a number of criteria. To execute the assessment, three unofficial diplomacy structures-one women’s peace initiative, one interactive problem-solving workshop initiative and one business oriented peace initiative-for each of the conflict cases have been highlighted. The work contains a brief introduction on three conflict cases in order to make the reader acquainted with the issues relating to second track activities. The research tries to reach this aim by giving a general review of non-governmental contributions to peace work-termed as second track diplomacy-where theoretical framework is strengthened by concrete cases.

Thereby the research clearly aims to assess the effectiveness of unofficial diplomacy work conducted by civic organisations and individuals to mitigate conflict between Turks and Greeks, Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, and Turks and Armenians. Non-governmental, non-state and civil society organisations and private individuals have more involvement in attempts of nonviolent action, peace-building, conflict resolution and reconciliation. While confining the boundaries of track 1½ diplomacy, attention will be focussed upon the design of a regional interactive conflict prevention framework, which will draw upon ICR as a preventive measure to de-escalate intrastate and regional conflicts before they cross the violence threshold.įor over one decade the international community is witnessing fundamental alterations in the violent conflict map of the world while the role of states and non-state actors keep on continuously transforming in a parallel process.

To this end, socialpsychological theories of conflict and conflict resolution will be explored in an effort to uncover the potential of a track 1½ interactive conflict prevention approach. More specifically, this dissertation will focus on creating a framework for track one and track two cooperation in which regional organisations can utilise Interactive Conflict Resolution methods to de-escalate intrastate conflict.

The principal focus will be on how track one diplomacy can cooperate with track two diplomacy on a regional level in order to de-escalate intrastate conflicts and regional conflict complexes, and prevent them from crossing the violence threshold. This dissertation will explore four developments and examine the possibilities and opportunities for an integrated track 1½ approach, focussed on regional conflict prevention and de-escalation of intrastate conflict.
